Information about Sedation in Dentistry
- Sedation is achieved with the use of various oral sedatives (triazolam, lorazepam and hydroxyzine) together with nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Oral Conscious Sedation is NOT general anesthesia, there are no IV's or injections or sedatives.
- You will be conscious during your entire appointment. This allows you to be responsive to the Dental team.
- You will feel very sleepy and relaxed.
- You will be able to verbalize needs and wants.
- You will be monitored during your entire appointment with blood pressure and pulse oximetry.
- There will be a team member with you at all times during your appointment.
- The sedatives that are used are amnesiacs. You will likely have little or no memory of the experience.
- The sedatives used relax your nervous system so you will feel little or no discomfort. This helps in reducing the need for pain medication after your appointment.
- After your appointment you will continue to relax the rest of the day and into the evening. A responsible companion will be required to be with you until the following day.
